L-taurine, or 2-aminoethylsulphonic acid, is a compound classified as a non-protein amino acid. This means that, in contrast to most of the best known amino acids, it does not have the ability to form peptide bonds and does not build proteins. Nevertheless, it is a very important compound for the body - a biogenic amino acid, i.e. essential for life. Hence its very abundant presence in tissues (mainly in skeletal muscles) and in the bloodstream. The importance of taurine in the body can be confirmed by the fact that it constitutes approx. 1/1000 of the human body mass and is thus the most abundant non-protein amino acid in the body.

L-taurine is formed in the body as a result of metabolic conversion of cysteine and methionine (endogenous amino acid) or can be supplied with food.
