- Astaxanthin is considered to be one of the strongest antioxidants. Its antioxidant properties are 6000 times stronger than vitamin C. Such strong antioxidant properties are due to the unique structure of the molecule, consisting of as many as 13 conjugated double bonds and ketone groups. By having both hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas, the astaxanthin molecule easily crosses the cell membrane bilayer and effectively protects cells from oxidative stress.
What is NatAxtin ™?
NatAxtin ™ is a natural oleoresin containing 10% astaxanthin, which is the result of intensive research and investment in the construction and development of algae farms located in the South American Atacama Desert, where Haematococcus pluvialis algae are grown, which are a source of natural astaxanthin. The result of these activities is a proprietary technology of cultivation in closed and open photobioreactors, based on a high level of cleanliness and asepsis. The location of the farms, away from agricultural and populated areas, guarantees safe cultivation of algae, free from any contamination.
What does the cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis algae look like?
For the preparation of the growing medium, crystal clear water from the Andes mountain range is used, subjected to a careful sterilization process, and genetically unmodified Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae are inoculated on a sterile culture medium in closed photobioreactors, where the algae are grown in the first stage of growth. Due to the observance of such precautions in the first stage of algae development, the risk of contamination of the crop with microorganisms is reduced to a minimum, while ensuring the highest quality end product - NatAxtin ™ astaxanthin.
The last stage of cultivation takes place in open ponds where Haematococcus pluvialis algae grow to reflect their natural environment.
What does NatAxtin ™ astaxanthin extraction look like?
The harvested microalgae are ground and vacuum-dried at low temperature, preserving the original properties, resulting in a powder with very high bioavailability. The obtained powder is subjected to supercritical CO2 extraction, resulting in an ultra pure NatAxtin ™ oleoresin containing 10% astaxanthin, free from residues of harmful solvents. The process is carried out in accordance with the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standard.
Astaxanthin - natural vs synthetic
It is estimated that about 95% of the astaxanthin available on the market is artificial astaxanthin, obtained by chemical synthesis.1) The reason is the much lower cost of chemical synthesis of this compound compared to obtaining it from natural sources such as the cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis algae.
Although synthetic astaxanthin has the same chemical formula as natural astaxanthin, the two forms are very different. Natural astaxanthin, extracted from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, contains not only astaxanthin, but also a whole complex of algae substances that ensure their survival. This complex consists of about 85% astaxanthin, but apart from that, it also includes other valuable compounds such as lutein, β-carotene and canthaxanthin. The coexisting substances work synergistically to enhance the effects of astaxanthin, making natural astaxanthin a much more effective antioxidant than synthetic astaxanthin. The presence of astaxanthin in its natural matrix also improves its stability compared to its synthetic counterpart.
It is also worth mentioning that despite technological purification processes, synthetic astaxanthin may contain residues of the synthesis in the form of harmful chemical compounds.
Our product includes only natural Nat-Axtin ™ astaxanthin derived from Haematococcus pluvialis algae, free from this type of pollution and characterized by the highest biological activity.
