Essence Collagen is a dietary supplement in capsule form containing collagen (type I collagen hydrolysate).
WHERE DOES COLLAGEN OCCUR?
Collagen makes up around 30% of all proteins in the human body and is therefore the most important structural protein. It is present in larger quantities in virtually all organs and tissues, including bones, ligaments, corneas, tendons and skin. Twenty-eight different types of collagen have been identified in vertebrates; skin contains collagen types I and III, and cartilage contains collagen types II and III. Collagen fibres give these tissues their tensile strength. Collagen from Essence is precisely a hydrolysate of type I collagen.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF COLLAGEN IN OUR BODY?
The primary role of collagen is to maintain the function of connective tissue and the mechanical properties of the skin. As collagen is the main component of the extracellular matrix, it is essential for the strengthening, regulation and regeneration of this tissue. Collagen also makes up 65-80% of the dry weight of tendons, and collagen bonds help the tendon structure promote resistance to stress. For this reason, collagen is important in maintaining tendon function and neutralising the possible risk of injury during physical activity. However, you must note that the basis for maintaining full fitness is to conduct a proper warm-up for the workout you are about to perform. After all, it is the warm-up that prepares the body for the upcoming effort, so remember to set aside enough time for this between sessions, e.g. at the gym.
COLLAGEN AND SKIN
Collagen, the most abundant component of the extracellular matrix, is a protein that determines the physiology of the skin. It maintains the skin's structure and enables it to carry out its many functions. The extracellular matrix retains water and ensures smooth, firm and strong skin. The structure of collagen resembles a rope - three chains wrap around each other to form a triple collagen helix. These building blocks come together to form collagen fibres with enormous strength and tensile strength.
TYPES OF COLLAGEN
Collagen is characterised by a high concentration of the three amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, which form its aforementioned characteristic triple helix. Consequently, collagen is enzymatically hydrolysed, breaking it down into smaller bioactive peptides (the basic complementary form of collagen), which are readily absorbed in the digestive tract before entering the circulation. Thanks to hydrolysis, collagen peptides do not have the gelling properties of gelatin and are soluble in cold water. Current sources of collagen peptides include hydrolysed bovine, porcine, marine and poultry collagen.
Essence Collagen - it's always worth taking during periods of increased strength training, but also endurance training. It may constitute both the basis and an additional element of supplementation.
