How important is collagen?
Collagen (especially types I and II) are the most important structural and functional components of the extracellular matrix of tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Quantitative and qualitative changes in the matrix structure (e.g. reduced collagen content) are detected by tissue-specific cells, which stimulate anabolic and catabolic processes to regulate the physiological composition of extracellular matrix macromolecules1.

What is collagen hydrolyzate?
Hydrolyzed collagen is a form of collagen also known as collagen hydrolyzate. Collagen hydrolysates are intensively processed to break down large collagen molecules into smaller fragments to enhance absorption. To produce hydrolyzed collagen, collagen is denatured and then hydrolyzed to form very low molecular weight collagen peptides. These lower molecular weight collagen peptides can be more easily absorbed in the small intestine, theoretically making them more likely to be delivered to other areas of the body, including joints2.

Proline and vitamin C are important for collagen
The most abundant amino acids in collagen are glycine and proline or its derivative, hydroxyproline. Proline and hydroxyproline together constitute approx. 23% of the amino acid content in the collagen molecule. Of the body's stock of hydroxyproline, about 99.8% is in collagen, making testing for this amino acid useful as a marker of total collagen. Both proline and hydroxyproline are essential to the biosynthesis, structure and strength of collagen3. As for vitamin C, it also plays a role in collagen synthesis.
