Potassium iodide 30 mg is indicated for use in the event of nuclear disasters, during which radioactive iodine isotopes were released, in order to prevent the uptake of radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland after ingestion or inhalation of a radioactive substance. Potassium iodide tablets may only be taken after an express request by the relevant authorities. It is recommended to take the tablet as soon as possible, preferably within 2 hours of exposure. A single administration of the recommended dose is sufficient.
Potassium iodide administered orally causes saturation of the thyroid gland with non-radioactive iodine. This is crucial in case of exposure to radioactive iodine contamination. Timely administration of potassium iodide inhibits the uptake of radiation iodine from sources of its emission, such as polluted air, water, liquids, food.
