Borage is an annual plant belonging to the borage family. It is distinguished by blue flowers in the shape of a five-pointed star with an intense cucumber aroma. The herbal raw material are cold pressed borage seeds from which oil is obtained. It is a rich source of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The most important of these is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).


Gamma-linolenic acid is a source of essential unsaturated fatty acids (EFAs). The name of these acids is associated with the need to provide them with food, because their synthesis does not occur in the human body. EFAs are also referred to as vitamin F, which is necessary in the diet, which is derived from the English word 'Fatty Acids'.


The scope of GLA depends largely on the form of application. Externally applied, it only goes to the stratum corneum and fills the intercellular space. When taken orally, it overcomes more barriers and passes into the dermis. The preparation has been enriched with vitamin E, which helps to protect DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage.
