Reishi mushrooms are fan-shaped and are a rare find in nature. They used to be reserved for members of the royal family when they were first discovered in Asian cultures thousands of years ago. Today they are grown commercially and sold in many different forms.

Reishi, or Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), is a species of saprophytic fungus belonging to the lacewing family. It is extremely rare in its natural state, mainly in Asia, but also in North and South America and Europe. For this reason, reishi mushrooms are now widely cultivated.

Valuable polysaccharides
The polysaccharides in the reishi mushroom are mainly responsible for its biological activity. More than two hundred of these have been isolated from different parts of the mushroom. Most often they are in the form of β-glucans which have an immunostimulating effect.

Split spores 
The biological activity of reishi spores is increased by splitting them. The polysaccharides in the mushroom are then released more easily and are better absorbed, penetrating the cell walls.
