Glycine, or aminoacetic acid, is the simplest of all protein amino acids. It is the only one that occurs in only one spatial configuration and has no optical function. Therefore, the name glycine, exceptionally, does not contain the prefix L-, as is the case with the other amino acids. It is also one of the most abundant amino acids in the human body, being an important structural component of proteins.
