Oregano is the most common species of the genus Origanum. The main active substance of the oregano herb is the essential oil and, depending on its place of origin, time of harvest, and genetic factors, its chemical composition varies.
The essential oil contains dozens of active substances, several of which give it specific properties and are considered the main ones. As a result, there are different chemotypes of wild oregano oil depending on the main active ingredient (carvacrol, sabinene, linalool, p-cymene, thymol, etc.) with different physicochemical parameters and thus different properties.
The best researched variety of the oil is considered to be the carvacrol chemotype (high carvacrol content, low thymol content) originating from the mountainous regions of the Mediterranean. The effectiveness and properties of this oil are mainly due to the presence of carvacrol and thymol in the right proportions.
Its unique characteristics are:
- High, natural concentration of carvacrol (80%) and low thymol (< 2%).
- It is 100% essential oil, in its pure form with no added oil.
- The oil is extracted by steam distillation without the use of chemicals.
- It comes from remote parts of the mountainous Mediterranean coast from hand-picked, wild-grown herb where no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides are used, which contaminate conventional oregano crops.
- The oil is extracted only from authentic Origanum vulgare species, the carvacrol chemotype.
