Spermidine is a polyamine that occurs naturally in every cell in the body. It has the ability to activate the autophagy process in which cell regeneration and rebuilding takes place. During this process, unnecessary, old or damaged cell components, proteins or other elements are removed. As a result, autophyagy cleans the cells of unnecessary metabolites, reducing the risk of pathological inflammatory processes.
Regardless of its source, spermidine is the only known endogenous substance capable of activating autophagy.

Although our body produces spermidine on its own, its endogenous production drops significantly with age. This means that our cells then have less spermidine to activate autophagy. As a consequence, the ability to rebuild cells decreases and susceptibility to age-related diseases increases.
