Maca is a Peruvian plant grown in the Andes. It is a vegetable related to broccoli, cabbage, and kale. Maca is a common ingredient in Peruvian cuisine, giving dishes an earthy flavor. Maca root can be ground into a powder and added to meals or smoothies. The effects of maca root and the properties of maca include numerous health benefits for our body. It regulates the level of sex hormones, helps women during menopause, improves male fertility, and also supports human cognitive processes. What does Maca root affect?

Below are the potential benefits of taking maca root:

1. Increased Libido - The most well-known benefit of maca root is its potential to increase libido. There is scientific evidence to support this claim. A 2002 study found that men who took 1.5 or 3 grams (g) of maca per day experienced increased libido compared to those who received a placebo.

It has been suggested that maca root may help reduce sexual dysfunction in postmenopausal women.

2. Reduced Erectile Dysfunction - Maca root may also benefit people with erectile dysfunction. A 2009 study looked at the effect of consuming 2.4 g of maca root per day for 12 weeks on participants' perceptions of their overall and sexual well-being. The study participants were men with mild erection problems.  Those taking maca root experienced significant increases in erection quality compared to the placebo group.

3. Increased energy and stamina - Some athletes and bodybuilders use maca root as a supplement that will lead to increased energy and performance. There is evidence to support this type of effect. According to a 2009 study, taking maca extract for 14 days can improve an athlete's performance by several percent over the placebo group.

4. Increased fertility - Another common use of maca root is to increase fertility, especially in men. Maca root may improve sperm quality in both fertile and infertile men. However, more research is needed in this area.

5. Mood Improvement - Maca contains flavonoids that can improve mood and reduce anxiety. Maca root can reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.

Maca root was first mentioned in the 17th century as an energy and mood-enhancing food. Studies have been done where participants were asked to rate their anxiety and depression levels before and after taking maca root. These studies found that the scores improved after taking maca root. However, if you are experiencing low mood and anxiety, talk to your GP before trying Maca or other herbal remedies.

6. Lower Blood Pressure - Maca root can also help to improve blood pressure,  and therefore protect us from heart disease.

7. Reduce Sun Damage- Maca root can help protect the skin from UV rays. Maca leaf extracts can prevent the formation of sunburn cells

8. Fight Free Radicals- Maca root also supports the body's natural antioxidants, such as glutathione and superoxide dismutase.

Antioxidants help fight free radicals, which can damage the body's cells. Some believe that antioxidants can help prevent certain health conditions, including heart disease and cancer.

9. Reduce Menopausal Symptoms- Some proponents of maca root believe it can help balance levels of the hormone estrogen. During perimenopause, the stage before a woman reaches menopause, estrogen levels fluctuate and cause a variety of symptoms. It can help combat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. Menopause happens to women at a certain age and refers to the time when menstruation stops.

Symptoms of menopause include:
  • worsened mood and anxiety
  • decreased libido
  • low energy

Studies conducted on postmenopausal women suggest a general reduction in the above symptoms after consuming maca root daily. These studies suggest that maca root appears to have a balancing effect on hormones. If you are experiencing menopause, talk to your doctor about possible treatments.

10. Improve learning and memory - Maca root may improve learning and memory. Additionally, researchers indicate that maca root may be helpful in treating conditions that affect these processes, such as Alzheimer's disease.

11. Weight gain - People who want to increase the number of calories in their diet may choose to add maca powder to their meals or smoothies. The nutritional composition of maca powder may help maintain the cells and muscles in your body. There are also a number of protein powders and snacks that can help with weight gain, as well as foods and drinks that you can add to your diet to increase your mass.
