Maca is an Andean plant native to high mountain regions. Its Latin name is Lepidium meyeni. For over 2,000 years, it has been an important part of the diet of the inhabitants of Peru and Bolivia. Almost every part of the plant is used, e.g. maca roots can be boiled with porridge or fermented into beer, the leaves are often eaten raw. During the Spanish colonization period, maca was so valued that it was used as a form of currency. Legends say that the Incas used maca before battle to increase their fighting spirit, strength and condition.
