- Optimally absorbable curcumin-sunflower phospholipids to maintain a healthy inflammatory response in animals
- CurcuVET-SA150 is curcumin formulated to help maintain a normal inflammatory response in the gastrointestinal, liver, and musculoskeletal systems of medium and large dogs.
CurcuVet-SA150
Curcumin, the orange pigment of turmeric (the main ingredient in curry), is a powerful antioxidant that provides numerous benefits for joint health, liver support, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular health as it helps to maintain a normal cytokine balance in your pet. However, in both humans and companion animals, curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. CurcuVET®, a unique and patented curcumin extract available exclusively from ThorneVET, is a much more digestible form of curcumin than other forms of curcumin. Research has shown that CurcuVET supports a healthy inflammatory response in cats and dogs; for example, a recent European study found that CurcuVET was effective in helping to maintain a healthy cytokine balance in dogs. CurcuVET-SA50 is designed for cats and smaller dogs, while Curcuvet-SA150 is designed for medium and large dogs.
In numerous animal studies, curcumin has shown the ability to help maintain a healthy intestinal mucosa under a variety of adverse conditions. Among the effects noted in various trials were reductions in the nuclear factor kappaB, nitric oxide, and free radicals in the colon mucosa.
- The liver-protective effect of curcumin is largely due to its ability to scavenge free radicals. But curcumin also strengthens the animal's natural antioxidant system by increasing glutathione levels, thus helping to detoxify the liver and inhibiting the formation of nitrosamines.
Scientists at Indena S.p.A., world experts in plant extract technology, have discovered the key to curcumin absorption - phytosome technology. Phytosomes are plant extracts related to phospholipids, which are essential components of all cell membranes. Orally ingested phospholipids are very well absorbed. Thus, by attaching a curcumin molecule to a phospholipid, curcumin can be carried across the cell membrane for better absorption.
A 2007 study published in the journal Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology showed better bioavailability of the curcumin phytosome (as Meriva®, the human equivalent of CurcuVET) compared to regular curcumin. In particular, liver levels of curcumin were higher with this form of curcumin supplementation. In a more recent, randomized, double-blind, crossover study involving nine people, the absolute bioavailability of curcuminoids measured in blood was approximately 29 times higher with Meriva than with conventional turmeric extract.
A recent study in horses on the effect of CurcuVET on the expression of proinflammatory cytokine genes showed a significant reduction in interleukin-1? and interleukin-1RN in mares, and inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2, tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-1RN, and an increase in interleukin-6 in foals.
