Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth or diatomite earth, is a fragmented sedimentary rock formed from the shells of diatoms, the shells of single-celled microscopic organisms (known as phytoplankton) that lived millions of years ago in fresh and salt waters. The diatomite contained in the preparation is characterized by:
Encapsulated diatomite is standardized for its high content of as much as 93% silica, of which 47% is silicon.
WHAT IS DIATOMACEOUS EARTH?
Diatomaceous earth is a simple and ancient treasure that has recently been rediscovered by modern researchers. Although not all types of diatomaceous earth can be used internally by humans, diatomite used in supplementation is completely safe for consumption and is often considered a "super food," or superfood. Diatomaceous earth has a white or yellowish-white color, a soft, porous and dusty structure. Although the composition is dominated by silica, it also contains a number of other trace elements essential for health: aluminum, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and manganese in the form of oxides.
WHAT DOES SCIENCE SAY ABOUT THE USE OF DIATOMITE?
1. support of teeth, bones and joints
Silica in diatomaceous earth can have an impact on stronger teeth, healthier bones and more flexible joints. According to a 2007 study published in The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging, dietary silicon is beneficial for healthy bone mass and connective tissue1. Amorphous diatomaceous earth not only supports normal metabolic processes, but also has a measurable effect on bone mineral density2. Adding diatomaceous earth to your daily diet can have a significant positive impact on skeletal strength and function3.
2. strong hair and nails
Silicon-rich products can help strengthen hair and nails. Using dietary supplements containing silicon is a well-known way to support hair strength, reducing hair loss4,5. Silica, abundant in natural diatomite, is a source of bioavailable silicon.
3. Fighting parasites
Can diatomaceous earth help in the fight against dangerous parasites? This question remains somewhat open, as we still lack human studies in this regard. However, a number of animal studies suggest that the properties of diatomite can help cleanse the digestive system of parasites. Diatomaceous earth has long been used to control parasites in livestock and pets6,7,8.
4. Nutrient absorption
Diatoms can support our digestive system not only by helping to get rid of parasites, but also by facilitating the absorption of essential minerals and other nutrients. Silicon is the main naturally occurring trace element in the human body, and the vast majority of this mineral comes from our diet. The presence of silica in most human cells suggests that it may play an important biological role.9 The bioavailability of silica has been found to improve the absorption of dietary nutrients10.
5. Cleansing the body of toxins and supporting the digestive system
The benefits of diatomaceous earth can be seen throughout the digestive system, especially when it comes to detoxifying the intestines. Diatomite can be beneficial in removing a range of heavy metals and other toxins. Diatomite can be used to reduce waste buildup and improve intestinal health, and silicon dioxide may have a role in alleviating gastrointestinal disorders11.
6. Blood pressure and heart health
Silica may have an impact on maintaining the elasticity and strength of blood vessel walls and arteries, and support overall heart health. Studies indicate that silica may reduce the risk of heart and artery disease12. Silicon and orthosilicic acid, which are involved in the formation of elastin and collagen13,14, are responsible for this effect.
7. Effects on cholesterol
One study involving a supplemental form of diatomite involved people with high cholesterol levels. Participants took the dietary supplement three times a day for eight weeks. At the end of the study, total cholesterol dropped by an average of 13%, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides decreased slightly, and "good" HDL cholesterol increased15.
