Graviola, (Annona muricata), a plant belonging to the family (Annonaceae), also known as guanabana. It is found in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil and other parts of South America. Popular in Cuba, the Bahamas, Colombia and Puerto Rico. Graviola trees also grow in other hot corners of the world, such as Africa, and can grow to 5 to 7 meters in height, with large, heart-shaped leaves.
Graviola is an evergreen tree. It provides sweet fruit with strawberry and pineapple flavors all year round, but there are varieties that taste like coconut, citrus and bananas. The edible fruit ripens in an inedible peel that looks like a chestnut shell. Ripe graviola fruits weigh from 4.5 to almost 7 kilograms. Where it occurs, it is a source of widely available and cheap food for indigenous peoples.
