D-Mannose is a bioactive simple sugar (chemical monosaccharide) which is mainly found as a natural component of cell and mucous membranes in our body. Mannose is also found in small amounts in our foods, for example in various fruits. Unlike related sugars, such as the more well-known glucose, D-mannose is not metabolised in the body, but reaches the kidneys directly via the bloodstream and from there unused the bladder, where it is discharged.

The sweetness is caused by the α-form, the bitterness by the β-form of the natural sugar. When buying D-Mannose, therefore, you should always pay attention to both taste components.
