Vitamin B2 is a water-soluble substance, also known as riboflavin. Riboflavin is a compound with a characteristic yellow-orange colour, discovered during work on the analysis of cow's milk and known until the 1920s as lactochrome. 

Vitamin B2 riboflavin:

• contributes to the normal metabolism of iron in the organism, including maintaining the normal level of iron and its transport,
• contributes to protection of cell components against oxidative damage,
• has antioxidant properties,
• participates in the process of releasing energy contained in food,

• helps to maintain healthy skin and mucous membranes,
• helps to maintain normal vision,
• helps to maintain normal red blood cell count,
• contributes to the reduction of feelings of tiredness and staleness.

Riboflavin is the primary form of the vitamin that the human intestine is capable of absorbing, and in the body it undergoes metabolism to coenzymatically active forms. Riboflavin 5'-phosphate undergoes metabolism to the free form of riboflavin, carried out by alkaline phosphatase in the small intestine.

In the case of B2, the vitamin is absorbed both as the free form of riboflavin and as flavin mononucleotide, i.e. R-5'-P. Special transport systems are designed for this. Absorption is better when the vitamin is taken after a meal because the food content slows down peristalsis somewhat and prolongs its residence time in the small intestine, which aids effective uptake. The body absorbs about 27-35 mg of riboflavin at a time, so taking larger, single doses is not as effective as breaking up the supply into several smaller doses. Accumulation of the vitamin is low; excess is excreted easily in the urine, the colour of which changes to juicy shades of yellow.
